Detailed Tour itinerary

Explore your day-by-day journey

Destination: Airport - Dambulla Stay : Dambulla

Drive: Approximately 3 Hrs.(129KM)

Upon your arrival in Sri Lanka, you will be greeted and assisted by your guide, who will transfer you to Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, where you will stay in Dambulla.

The Cultural Triangle refers to a region in central Sri Lanka that encompasses some of the country’s most significant historical and archaeological sites. It is formed with key locations such as Sigiriya, Dambulla, and Habarana also lying within this culturally rich area.

Experience: Explore Dambulla Cave Temple

On reaching, venture to the renowned Dambulla Royal Cave and Golden Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The hike to the caves is relatively short but steep, and once at the summit, you can explore the cave complex while enjoying breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.

A sacred pilgrimage site for over 22 centuries, Dambulla is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka, with a towering rock that rises 160 meters above the plains. The caves originally served as a refuge for an exiled king, who later commissioned stunning images of the Buddha once he regained his throne. Over time, successive kings embellished the temple. Of the more than 80 documented caves in the area, the main attractions are concentrated in five caves, featuring a remarkable collection of statues and murals.  The caves house 153 Buddha statues, three statues of Sri Lankan kings, and four statues of Hindu gods including Vishnu and Ganesha. The murals cover an impressive 2,100 square meters (about 23,000 square feet), illustrating key events from the life of Gautama Buddha, such as his first sermon and the temptation by the demon Mara. These beautifully preserved artworks offer profound insight into the island’s artistic and religious heritage. In addition to its Buddhist importance, the Dambulla Caves hold archaeological significance. Excavations near the site, particularly at Ibbankatuwa, have revealed prehistoric burial sites with human skeletons dating back over 2,700 years, showing that the caves were inhabited long before the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.

Once completed, check in at the hotel.

Please note that the standard check-in time at all hotels is 2:00 PM.

After checking in, take some time to relax and enjoy your first day in Sri Lanka.

Destination: Dambulla - Sigiriya Stay : Dambulla

Drive: Approximately ½ Hr. (14KM)

Experience: Climb Sigiriya Rock

After breakfast explore the iconic Sigiriya Rock, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Sri Lanka's most famous landmarks. This towering rock, a hardened magma plug of an extinct volcano, is visible for miles around. Historically, Sigiriya served both as a royal fortress built by King Kashyapa (477 - 495 AD) and as a Buddhist monastery before and after Kashyapa's reign. Its dual role as a fortress and a monastic retreat makes it a site of significant cultural and historical importance.

The climb to the top takes approximately 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on your fitness, age, and crowd levels. There are about 1,200 steps, and the effort is rewarded with stunning panoramic views and a sense of accomplishment.

Along the way, you will pass vibrant frescoes and the mirror wall before reaching the lion's paws, remnants of a grand staircase that once passed through a giant lion's mouth, which gave the rock its nickname, Lion Rock. At the summit, you’ll find the ruins of a royal citadel that once covered the 1.6-hectare plateau.

Experience: Hiriwadunna Village Visit             Drive: Approximately ½ Hr. (17KM)

Afterwards discover the charm of Hiriwadunna Village, a picturesque rural area located near Habarana. Your tour begins with a scenic walk towards the village lake, where you can enjoy the refreshing breeze and capture photos of the natural surroundings. From there, you will take a catamaran ride across the serene waters to the heart of the rural village. After a short walk, through lush paddy fields and vegetable plots, you'll arrive at a village house, offering a glimpse into the daily life of Sri Lanka’s rural communities.

During your visit, you’ll witness the timeless agricultural practices of the village, including visits to paddy fields and gardens where endemic vegetables are cultivated. A highlight of the tour is climbing a treehouse, traditionally used by farmers to guard the fields at night from wild animals. You’ll also have the opportunity to enjoy a simple yet delicious meal, lovingly prepared by a woman from the village, using fresh, hand-picked vegetables from the surrounding farmland. If time allows, you can even watch the cooking process and learn how to make traditional roti or other local dishes.

The tour continues with a peaceful catamaran ride across Hiriwadunna Lake, offering spectacular views of the countryside and glimpses of the iconic Sigiriya and Pidurangala rocks in the distance.

Experience: Jeep Safari at Minneriya National Park

In the afternoon, set off on a thrilling jeep safari in Minneriya National Park with a private jeep and tracker.

Please note that you should arrive at the park by 2:00 PM to purchase your entrance tickets.

Located between Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa, the park spans 8,890 hectares of mixed evergreen forests and scrublands. Its centerpiece is the ancient Minneriya Tank, built in the 3rd century AD by King Mahasena. During the dry season, this tank becomes a vital water source, drawing large herds of elephants to bathe and graze, alongside vibrant flocks of birds, including cormorants and painted storks.

As you explore, you may encounter elephants, spotted deer, and sambar deer, one of the largest deer species in Sri Lanka.

Depending on the movement of the elephants, your safari may take you to Kaudulla National Park or Eco Park for a similarly exciting wildlife experience.

After the safari, head back to your hotel.
